Controversial true crime character Karen Read is not done capturing the attention of the public yet, despite the murder trial for the Massachusetts woman accused of killing her police officer boyfriend John O'Keefe ending with a hung jury in July.
ABC's 20/20 is set to air a special segment on the whirlwind proceedings on Friday, titled "Karen Read: The Perfect Storm." In it, the 20/20 team will try to make sense of the chaos, confusion and controversy surrounding the case and sensational trial.
Featuring "rare" interviews with Read herself, some of which took place in the immediate lead-up to the trial, as well as O'Keefe's family and friends, a trailer for the hour-long segment promises "exclusive personal video and Karen Read speaking out fully for herself."
Here's a look back the case and how to watch the special.
Who is Karen Read?
Read is a 44-year-old Massachusetts woman who was accused of killing her Boston police officer boyfriend, 46-year-old O'Keefe, after he was found dead in the snow on a fellow officer's lawn on the morning of Jan. 29, 2022.

In a trial that captured the nation's attention, prosecuting attorneys alleged that Read struck O'Keefe with her car after a night of drinking and then fled. However, the defense, headed by heavy-hitter attorney Alan Jackson, instead made the case that Read was a convenient scapegoat in a coverup initiated by local law enforcement in a theory that gained increasing public support.
After months of testimony, the trial came to a somewhat unsatisfying conclusion when a mistrial was announced on July 1 of this year due to a hung jury.
What is the ABC 20/20 interview about?
According to ABC, the "Karen Read: The Perfect Storm" special will include interviews with Read from different points throughout the trial and beyond.
An ABC story published in advance of the segment said that it will feature an interview in which 20/20 "caught up" with Read in her hotel room when she was preparing for the trial. It will also include "personal interviews with John O’Keefe’s family and close friends."
